Hi Reader,
It's me - Aimée Rebecca - your internet bestie who is currently living her best life on her birthday trip in Montenegro. (Make sure you’re following me on Instagram to see what I’m getting up to!)
And since it’s my birthday week, that means September is officially upon us. (Weird, right? Because it was literally just June two seconds ago!)
Anyway, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but September has a vibe. It’s almost like January’s slightly less extreme younger sister.
September hits, and suddenly everyone wants to get their life together.
New routines. New goals. New gym memberships. New wardrobes. New planners. New personalities. I’ve seen 4 TikToks just this morning about how people are ready to “lock in” for September.
And you know what I say - it’s always the right time to start changing your life.
But does it need to be so dramatic? Does it need to include a complete rebrand, a new diet, new style, an overhauled workout routine, and a daily to-do list so long it takes up two sides of A4 paper?
If you want to start changing your life this month, here’s my honest advice - start by doing one small, positive action a day.
I know it’s not exciting. I know it’s not flashy. I know it doesn’t have the same appeal as a 30-day life transformation that promises a whole new you starting tomorrow.
But it’s simple and sustainable, and that’s why it works!
Small, Positive Actions for September
So here are some small, positive actions you can try this month to help you start building new habits and making the most of your time.
- Start a new book - September was made for cosy evenings spent reading a good book. I’m midway through Yellowface by R.F. Kuang, and thoroughly enjoying it.
- Try a new healthy lunch recipe - I’ve recently discovered a new Quorn fajita rice bowl recipe that comes together in under five minutes, and it’s been a game-changer.
- Go for a walk somewhere new - look up walking routes in your area and explore! This is a free and easy way to have a main character moment.
- Book an appointment you’ve been putting off - there’s nothing glamorous about the dentist, a health check-up, or getting your car serviced. I get it! But your future self will thank you for getting it done.
- Try a new workout - from a YouTube dance video in your living room to trying new equipment in the gym, do something new that pushes you a little out of your comfort zone. I just started using the Ladder app, which gives me a new workout every day, and it’s forced me to finally try the machines I’ve been avoiding at the gym. I 100% recommend it, and you can use this link for a completely free trial.
- Have a craft evening - pull out the paints, try your hand at crochet, or order a mug-painting kit online. Put your phone away, make yourself a cute little drink, and enjoy being creative. (PS - it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t look good!)
- Declutter one small space - this isn’t about going full Mari Kondo and pulling everything out of your cupboards in one afternoon. Just focus on a single drawer, shelf, or cupboard, and tidy up the space.
Small, positive actions don’t change your life overnight. But they do change your life over time.
I always compare it to a 100-mile challenge with £1 million waiting at the finish line. You can’t sprint the whole way! But you can get up and walk 1 mile a day. Is it going to take a while? Sure! But are you really going to give up on the prize just because you can’t get it immediately?
